๐ฏ Purpose of the Role
The IT Technician provides critical second-line (Tier 1 – 2) technical support to the SPU community. This role ensures that the university’s academic and administrative functions remain uninterrupted by maintaining desktop hardware, software, and network connectivity. You will be a key player in the ICT team, bridging the gap between hardware vendors and end-users while ensuring the security and integrity of the universityโs digital environment.
๐ Key Responsibilities
Hardware & Software Maintenance
- Installation: Set up and maintain desktop hardware, peripherals, and software for staff and students.
- Vendor Liaison: Coordinate with external providers (HP, DELL, etc.) for repairs and specialized hardware support.
- Asset Management: Capture and maintain all IT assets in the ICT inventory database and manage the dispatch of equipment.
Network & Security Support
- Connectivity: Ensure desktop systems interconnect seamlessly with LAN, WAN, Wi-Fi, email servers, and administrative systems.
- Cybersecurity: Help users scan media for malware, identify suspicious emails, and ensure that all end-point security systems are up to date.
- Troubleshooting: Identify recurring technical issues and recommend long-term corrective actions.
Support & Training
- User Training: Provide initial training to users on new equipment and software.
- Documentation: Develop “how-to” guides and videos to empower the SPU community to solve common IT issues independently.
- Project Work: Assist in ICT project scoping, resource allocation, and implementation.
โ Minimum Requirements
- Education: National Diploma in Information Communication Technology (NQF 06).
- Experience: 2 to 4 years of related IT support experience.
- Technical Knowledge: * Proficiency in LAN, WAN, and Wi-Fi configuration.
- Experience with Active Directory, Microsoft, and Linux environments.
- Familiarity with major hardware vendors (HP, DELL, etc.).
- Licensing: Valid driver’s licence.
- Certifications: Industry-related certifications (e.g., CompTIA A+, N+) are beneficial.
